The Voyage of the Komagata Maru' is the account of a remarkable and determined attempt made by a group of Sikh peasants to challenge Canadian immigration laws. In May 1914, 400 Sikhs left for British Columbia by chartered ship, resolved to claim their rights to equal treatment with white citizens of the British Empire and force entry into Canada. Anchored off Vancouver for two months, they endured physical privation and harassment by immigration officials. Gunboat diplomacy eventually prevailed and they returned to India, only to be fired upon by soldiers of the Raj in Calcutta. A gripping and still very relevant tale!
