Despite the wide interest in Wordsworth and the Lake Poets, Cumberland and Westmoreland have remained something of an historical backwater. This book, based on previously untapped manuscript sources, is designed to correct all that. It concerns largely the fortunes of three families, the Lowthers of Whitehaven, the Curwens of Workington and the Senhouses, creators of the town of Maryport. The book is written by Edward Hughes, Professor of History at Durham University.
