Ernest Buckler was a Canadian novelist and short story writer best known for his 1952 novel, The Mountain and the Valley. In 1967, he was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal and in 1974, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Author Claude Bissell was the eighth president of the University of Toronto from 1958 to 1971. This book is Bissell's scholarly but affectionate tribute to the man Harry Bruce called, 'as tortured and lovable a genius as Canadian literature has ever produced.'
