Because of Maria Chela ChikuekaÆs status as an educated Christian woman, she was a target during AngolaÆs civil war. Like two million other Angolans, she lived in the bush on the run for two years between 1977 and 1979. Some lived on the run for up to 20 years. During her time in the bush, Chikueka ran a school for children in which she wrote lessons in the dirt. She repaired her only dress with tree fibers. Lived off of one tablespoon of corn a day. Learned how to recharge a battery by burying it in the earth next to the root of an osese tree. Surveyed other refugees about their ethnic backgrounds and put together a report on their different cultures. Gave comfort to other women and children in her group, even though she was separated from her own family, starving, and suffering physically. When Chikueka escaped her warring homeland, she first landed in New York City, living in Queens and working in Manhattan. The bus that she commuted on was hijacked and shot at. She experienced discrimination when looking for work. And when she did find a good job that she liked working in a laboratory at a university, she still was not satisfied because she felt she should be doing more to help people. So she left her comfortable job and moved to Canada to study theology.' This is a powerful book by the woman who is now a pillar of the Canadian religious community.
